Need help filling out the FAFSA? Have questions? Come to this workshop and find out how you can get ahead of game in funding your college education! For questions, call Sophie: 206.288.3511 or email: beaconya@gmail.com

If you miss today’s workshop, we’ll post highlights aftewards.

In the meantime, you can prepare by doing the following:

1.) Get a pin! It makes everything go faster. You can sign electronically and get things going (rather than mailing everything in). Visit: www.pin.ed.gov

2.) Get a copy of your parent’s tax info so that you can begin filling out their portion of the FAFSA. Here are some worksheets to help you if they haven’t filed their taxes yet: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/before012.htm

When you have these things ready, visit: fafsa.ed.gov to begin filling out your FAFSA! You can work on parts of it and keep saving.

After filling out your FAFSA you’ll receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) within three weeks. Carefully review all of the information on the SAR to make sure it is correct. Follow directions for making and submitting corrections promptly. If you do not receive a SAR within three weeks, or if you have questions about your SAR, refer to the Customer Service page.

Over the past 20 years, hundreds of young adult leaders have been challenged by the Ethnic Young Adult (EYA) Internship – formerly Ethnic Local Church (ELC) Internship. Both church and society now benefit at all levels from the time these outstanding young leaders have been nurtured during their time in Washington, D.C. combining work and worship, education and life Christian community.

The Ethnic Young Adults Summer Internship program is open to young adults age 18 to 22 representing the five ethnic caucuses of The United Methodist church – Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American and Pacific Islander. Applications are now available and we encourage you to recruit young people in your local church or annual conference who may benefit from this valuable opportunity.

Applicants must have an interest in exploring issues of public policy, social justice advocacy, and social change. Perspective interns must demonstrate a lively passion to explore faith and justice issues from a personal, institutional, and societal perspective.

Interns will live together in Christian community in Washington, D.C. and will be assigned to work in organizations addressing social justice concerns. That Work will be supplemented by evening intern-led devotions, Friday seminars on topics of timely social justice concern, area field trips, and Sunday worship in area United Methodist Churches. Participants must commit to being present at all these activities.

Applicants must be in good academic standing at their college or university if currently enrolled, demonstrate evidence of their concern for social justice through their extracurricular activity and academic study and have some history of involvement in their church and/or community. If employed full-time, applicants must show active leadership and participation in their local church and community and an involvement in social justice activities.

Each intern must be highly self-motivated, able to function effectively within a professional atmosphere, exercise good decision-making skills, feel comfortable working in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic urban environment and willing to participate in group activities.

The EYA Internship expects participants to return to their schools, churches, and communities with an increased commitment to working with and on behalf of marginalized groups in our society. Participants are also expected to share their experience with other persons from their community, school, and/or church.
